How often do forklift operators need to do refresher training?

Maralyn Kastel - Wednesday, May 15, 2013

Forklifts are involved in many workplace accidents including overturning and tipping, hitting structures and collisions with pedestrians.

It is important to regularly review the training needs of all workers at least annually. The Work Health & Safety Regulations require continually review of work health & safety training. This is particularly relevant to new and young workers.

It is also important that you discuss the hazards of using the forklift on a regular basis.

Do you know  when your forklift operators last received training?

Do you schedule refresher training on an annual basis to keep your operators up to date with current regulations and identify any bad habits they may have got into. Refresher training is especially important for operators who have had their license for many years. Often, the longer an operator has been licensed, the more bad habits they may have developed.

When an operator has an accident, one of the first things that will be looked at is your training records. How you have kept your workers up to date with legislation and best work health & safety practice for their job tasks?

Develop and put into practice:

  1. A work health & safety training register which identifies who has what licence, when it was issued, when it is due for renewal and
  2. An individual worker training record which includes training performed (internal and external) and training needed.
  3. All operators of forklifts must have a High Risk Work Licence and carry this with them at all times.
